Alpha60 Chapter House — Melbourne

Alpha60 with architect Jen Berean and Light Project develop an ambitiously modern lighting design for their retail concept shop – housed within a 150-year-old heritage listed space. The team was not permitted to suspend lighting from the space’s cathedral height ceilings, so instead they invented a series of freestanding modules.

Our creative vision

To combat the heritage restrictions, the team conceived sculptural modular shelving units with LED lighting interwoven into the cubic structures.

The light reflects off the panelling before being diffused onto the clothing. This allows customers to approach the light source directly without discomfort to the eye.

“It’s exciting what we can now do with light,” says Alpha60’s Alex Cleary. “Things are developing so fast that we can use interesting lighting to do things that weren’t an option for us a few years ago.”
